The Snowberry Advent Mystery

The Snowberry Advent Mystery is a printable detective advent calendar for kids aged 6–10: one story in 24 episodes, one puzzle a day, from 1 to 24 December.

5 to 10 minutes a day (our estimate): read a short episode, solve the puzzle, open a door of the paper advent calendar you build once.

Two versions of the same story: Junior (6–7) and Expert (8–10). Both levels of the same day open the same window, so siblings play together.

A real mystery with suspects and clues, warm and never scary: cute woodland animals in a snowy village.

Digital download: you print it at home. English and French included.

The mystery
  • On the night of the first snow, someone opened every window of the Great Advent Calendar of Snowberry, took the 24 paper lanterns for the Lantern Parade… and left a little woodland treasure in each one, with a letter scratched on it. Six animals were out that night.
  • Every day, the puzzle gives a window number. A sign on each door lets the children check their answer before opening it.
  • Behind each window: a treasure and one letter. On 5 clue days, a footprint, a thread, a print of glasses… helps them cross out a suspect.
  • A surprise on day 15 reopens the case. Older detectives also catch an alibi that does not hold up.
  • On Christmas Eve, they name the culprit and read the secret message hidden behind the 24 doors. Then a grown-up hands them a Top Secret letter that explains everything.
The paper advent calendar
  • 4 sheets: 2 back sheets and 2 door sheets. Cut the door sheets into strips, glue them on, snip between the doors: 30 doors that really open (24 windows + 6 empty spare windows for guessers).
  • Alignment marks and a step-by-step drawing. About 20 to 30 minutes, once (our estimate).
What the kids do
  • 24 different days: counting, tangled garlands, codes, spot the differences, sequences, join the dots, balance scales, grids, a weathervane, dice, arrows, logic grids, a sliding strip, a mirror message, parcel labels, a lift, snow layers, a torn poster, a turning wheel, a secret mask and a page to hold up to the light.
  • They fill in their own case board: letters, clues, suspects crossed out.
  • 4 case meetings (days 6, 12, 18, 23) to talk it over together.
For the grown-up
  • Start-Here guide: what to print, how to build the calendar, 3 ways to play (Express: just take today's page, Envelopes, or a little Hunt).
  • Parent Answers: the answer to every day, 2 hints per day and per level, a Plan B for the light trick, the full solution, and one-line catch-up summaries for days you missed.
  • Forgot a day, away for a weekend, starting late? Two pages a day and you are back on track.
  • No date printed: it works every December.
What you need
  • A printer (black & white is fine), paper, scissors, a glue stick, a little tape and pencils. No app, no screen, no padlock, nothing to buy.
What you print
  • The Detective Kit (10 pages: letter, suspect file, case board, the 4 calendar sheets, certificates) and one set of 24 day pages per child, Junior or Expert. The guide and the answers can be read on screen: from the answers, print only the Top Secret letter for Christmas Eve.
Languages and formats
  • English and French, A4 and US Letter, full colour and ink-saver.

What exactly do I get?

A digital download: printable PDF files in colour and ink-saver versions, A4 and US Letter. Nothing is shipped. You buy on Etsy and download the files straight away from your Etsy account.

What age are the games for?

Most games are for kids aged 6 to 10 (the spy mission goes up to 12). Each game has two levels, Junior and Expert, so brothers and sisters of different ages play the same mystery together.

How does a game work?

A grown-up hides the case cards around the home. The kids solve the puzzle on each card; every answer is a number that points to the next hiding place on the map. Along the way they collect clues, cross out suspects and name the culprit at the end.

How long does it take?

About 15 minutes to print and hide the cards, then roughly 30 to 45 minutes of play. These are our estimates. The advent calendar takes 5 to 10 minutes a day for 24 days.

Do I need a colour printer?

No. Every page works in black and white, and an ink-saver version is included. No information is carried by colour alone.

Which languages are included?

Our escape rooms include English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese in one purchase. The advent calendar is in English and French.

Is it a real escape room with padlocks?

No padlocks, no app and nothing to buy: just paper, scissors, pencils and a bit of tape. Each card has a small check sign so kids know their answer is right before they run off.

Can I use it for a birthday party?

Yes: for a birthday party, a sleepover or a family afternoon. The files are for personal and family use only, so please do not resell or share them.
